August Blog – Dementia the modifiable 14 risk factors & reducing the risk

Last month The Lancet Commission on dementia have claimed that 45% of global dementia can be linked to 14 modifiable risk factors these are:

  • Less Education
  • Hearing Loss
  • Vision Loss
  • Hypertension
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Diabetes
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Air Pollution
  • Social Isolation
  • High LDL Cholesterol

In addition to the above list, diet can play a pivotal role in reducing many of the chronic conditions that may contribute to dementia such as obesity and diabetes. The commission are hopeful these risk factors can also being used as part of preventable strategies.

The report is keen to acknowledge that one ‘size will not fit all’ approach but are optimistic that further exciting developments including emerging treatments, policy interventions and individually tailored risk reduction programmes can make a positive difference, whilst further population level, multi-domain research is needed to promote effective, sustainable and equitable dementia prevention.
